Marion, an American circus performer, is forced to flee the US with her black son. While on tour in Moscow, she falls in love with a Soviet engineer, Ivan. But her manager blackmails her by threatening to reveal her past to new colleagues. The Circus is one of the most popular Soviet musical comedies, based on a story written by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov together with Valentin Katayev. But first and foremost, The Circus exposes Soviet hypocrisy and the values that have been forcibly imposed on the citizens of the country.
